Who exactly is Gen. Asim Munir?
Gen Munir is an outstanding officer, but due to the technicalities involved, it was previously thought that he would remain the proverbial dark horse in the race for army chief.
At the time of his nomination for the position, Gen Munir's retirement date was November 27, which posed a technical snag in his ascension to the top spot. To compensate, he was promoted to the rank of four-star general with immediate effect after being named army chief, which was unusual.
Gen Munir was promoted to three-star general in September 2018 but took command two months later. He joined the military through the Officers Training School programme He was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment in Mangla.
He has been a close aide to Gen Bajwa since he was a brigadier in the Force Command Northern Areas under the outgoing army chief, who was then Commander X Corps.
Lt Gen Munir was later appointed Military Intelligence Director General in early 2017 and Inter-Services Intelligence Chief in October of the following year.
He was assigned as Gujranwala Corps commander for two years before being transferred to General Headquarters as the quartermaster general.
